Rapper Young Thug released his third EP, On The Rvn back on September 24, 2018. The EP was released just a month after he released his compilation album Slime Language. On The Rvn featured Migos’ Offset, 6LACK, Jaden Smith, T-Shyne, and the most surprising is Elton John’s “Rocket Man” sample. The EP is just six tracks long combined for 22 minutes.

The first song off the EP is “On The Run”. The title refers to his arrest related to drug possession and distribution, with few indirect mentions of racial injustice in the United States. Thug raps with autotune as usual, with stripped-back drum and bass centered beats and some nice minor details like sirens and flute in the background. His verses in “On The Run” are on point, especially his 2nd verse. Offset’s feature, on the other hand, is forgatable at best. His verse doesn’t really add anything to the song. In the second song “Icey”, he shares his concern towards his partner. He feels like the only thing he can provide is money, that he lacks anything else that would make him a good partner, and the way he lives is not sustainable for a long term relationship. The beat is nothing special, just usual bass and cymbals. The third song is “Climax”. In this song he talks about a breakup he has gone through. Thug and 6LACK exchange verses going back and forth on the breakup and the relationship itself. The guitar hook on the background is the highlight of this song. The fourth song is “Sin”. In this song Thug and Jaden Smith reflect on their past mistakes and the fact that they have to live with the consequences. Jaden’s verses are very good, as his vocal tone really matches the theme. Thug as usual mashes well with Jaden as he does with almost everyone. The beat in this song is very addicting. The fifth song, “Real In My Veins”, reminds listeners of Young Thug’s contribution and influence for the culture. Young Thug is one of the hip hop pioneers of this generation. The synth-heavy beat is also very catchy. The last song, “High”, features a sample of Elton John’s “Rocket Man”. The track is Thug’s reflection of his career, everything he has done for the music industry, and his goodbye, as he at the time still doesn’t know how his trial will go. Thug harmonizing with Elton John is very beautiful and definitely the highlight of this EP.

Overall, On The Rvn is a pretty good EP. It has some good songs, such as “Climax”, “Sin”, “Real In My Veins”, and “High”, and few average songs, such as “On The Run” and “Icey”. This EP is not as experimental as most of his projects, however the guitar hooks and Elton John’s sample are nice touch he added to the EP. His rapping in this album might not be his best, but he harmonizes very well in this album. Production in this EP is very good, as expected from a Young Thug project. I really recommend On The Rvn, and Young Thug’s music in general, to people who listen to Lil Yachty, Rae Sremmurd, Juice WRLD, and Trippie Redd, as he is one of the pioneers when it comes to that kind of Hip Hop.
