Emo is a rock genre portrayed by an emphasis on emotional expression, sometimes through confessional lyrics. It was a subgenre of punk rock music that appeared in Washington, DC in the mid-1980s. Often, the singers of these bands would sing about depression, drug use, and societal problems. Rite Of Spring (as a pioneer of the emo subculture) launched the subgenre when they moved away from punk scene and they put the focus of their music and lyrics on personal pain and suffering.
