SM Entertainment, one of the biggest entertainment companies in South Korea, has just recently launched their latest boygroup, which consists of members of four of their current biggest boy groups—Taemin from SHINee and Baekhyun & Kai EXO, joined by members from two NCT units, Taeyong & Mark from NCT127 and Ten & Lucas from WayV. The group is packed with a high budgeted marketing strategy, boasting the “Avengers of K-Pop” theme due to the boys being members of already established groups.

Taemin, the member with the longest debut time, debuted in 2008 with SHINee and in 2014 as a soloist, with his long and amazing portfolio, is unofficially appointed as the group’s center—due to him always standing in the middle of the crowd in the group’s pictures and other promotional materials. He is well-known for being an amazing dancer, having auditioned at SM to become a dancer. His growing vocal skills also led him to become a vocalist and debut as a soloist with his debut EP, Ace, in 2014.

Baekhyun, the group’s currently appointed leader and the oldest member of SuperM, debuted as one of EXO’s main vocalists, spending only 3 months of training period before finally debuting in EXO. Aside from his amazing vocals, Baekhyun is known as a fast learner. It is well known that he could memorise dance choreos in a short amount of time. He is also the comic of the group—which everyone agrees on.

Kai, coming from a ballet and jazz background, spent his training years together with Taemin who later became his best friend. He debuted with EXO in 2012 as the group’s center, main dancer, and face of the group. His charismatic performance and stunning visuals make him easy to remember thus making him the “stan attractor”—as the fans said. He recently became the global ambassador of fashion brand Gucci, making him the first Korean person to become the brand’s global ambassador.

Taeyong, a gifted and a multi-talented member of SM’s limitless boy group, NCT and its subunit, NCT127, also joined SuperM. The only member with a songwriting and producing credit for SuperM, he is also known to write the lyrics for his original group, NCT and for his recent solo release, “Long Flight”.

Mark, a Korean-Canadian member of NCT and its subunit NCT 127 was also featured in NCT Dream but recently graduated due to the group’s rule of no member exceeding the age of 20 (Korean age). Mark, the youngest member of SuperM, is known for his rap ability. He was even dubbed as “born-to-be a rapper”.

Ten, a member of NCT and its Chinese subunit WayV, is a gifted dancer. Prior to debuting in WayV, Ten was featured in NCT-U’s (NCT’s first unit) debut single “The 7th Sense”. He also released 2 singles, “Dream in A Dream” and “New Heroes”. Coming from Thailand, he is the first Thai citizen to become an SM idol.

Lucas, the latest addition to SM’s limitless group, NCT, joined WayV in late 2018 and immediately became fans’ favorite because of his charisma and variety show skills. He has also walked in various runways, thanks to his model-like physique. He is one of NCT & WayV’s rappers.

Formed from all star idols with different backgrounds and skills, SuperM boasted a material that is causing massive uproars, from their agreeing fans to the members’ initial group’s fans dismay. No matter how it went for them, SuperM succeeded in creating history. Making them the first Korean act to earn #1 from their debut album in the US Billboard Album Chart, trending their names in social media, and eventually, selling out their merchandise. After debuting in the US earlier this October, the group is set to make their Korean promotion in late October and also release an album for the Korean market on October 31st, 2019. The group is also packed with arena tours across America throughout November 2019 and February 2020.

SuperM’s debut mini album, featuring the upbeat title track “Jopping” has quickly become a meme among fans—and non fans. The term “Jopping”, the result of wordplay from mixing “jumping” and “popping” into one word, has become fans’ favorite and also trended worldwide. In a video of SuperM’s appearance at Ellen DeGenerees’ show, Kai was shown demonstrating the “jopping” move to Ellen. (watch here) and every member got up to “jop” together.

The b-side of the album, “I Can’t Stand The Rain”, was previously released in an instrumental only version. It has all seven members participating in performing the song. While the other tracks only have a few members participating (e.g. in “2 Fast” all members except for Ten and Kai were included in the song, “Super Car” where everyone except Lucas and Kai was included, and “No Manners” where everyone except Mark and Baekhyun was included).

Lee Soo Man had previously stated that SuperM will bring back “SMP” to life again. “SMP” or “SM Music Performance” is the company’s self-made term for their musical genre, which includes captivating performance of dance, hip-hop, R&B, and pop music fusion. Participating in the album production is Lee Soo Man himself, SM’s longtime producer, Yoo Young Jin, LDN Noise, Kenzie, Jam Factory, and Lee Taeyong (for the song “No Manners”).
